Seasonal Characteristics Tool (Sow Smart)

Sow Smart is our flagship digital platform designed to translate complex climate indices into simple, actionable planting guidance. It calculates precise planting windows and crop water requirements for every district in Uganda, helping farmers decide exactly when—and what—to plant.

The tool ingests seasonal onset forecasts, historical rainfall distributions, and soil-type data to generate location-specific recommendations for maize, beans, coffee, and other major crops.

  • Optimal planting onset dates by district and crop.
  • Total crop water requirements across the growing season.
  • Risk of dry spells during critical crop growth stages.
  • Recommended cessation dates for planning harvest logistics.
